WISH LISTS
The Scientist's
We have two programs:
1. For start-up labs or your favorite scientist/project
2. For high school, middle and elementary school science programs and small budgeted undergraduate science programs.
How does this work?
Lab equipment and materials are not cheap. With the economy the way it is, distributors, scientists and schools, domestically and abroad, are having problems funding their warehouses, research and classrooms. This is where you come in. You can directly make a donation of a micro-grant towards equipment WISHED for by a scientist and his/her research group or a science teacher/program and have it shipped to them directly.
This allows you to donate to your favorite research field or help a floundering science program that is facing steep cuts because of the economy. All donations will be 100% appropriated to your program of choice and are 100% auditable.
Purchasing donations can work in two ways. You can either outright purchase equipment and supplies needed or you can donate toward a purchase. For each product that reaches its purchase goal, shipping will paid for by sBench and delivered the next day.
So, come and help us:
Change Science With $1.00, $5.00 or even 10 cents.
Why do this?
Unfortunately the answer is simple: science does not have enough money. As a result, getting funding, going into research and even maintaining a position has become more and more competitive. In some ways, we can argue that this leads to a Darwinian approach to technological development, but at the same time it curtails creativity and the realization of ideas.
Many of us here at sBench were, are and know those scientists. We have faced the fact that even if we have the money to do our research, we are some of the most underpaid people out there. While we are not driven by our pockets, the reality of the starving, both experimental (and even more so) theoretical, scientist stands true. So, join us in taking a stand and help make SCIENCE sustainable.
Micro-grants that change society

SANA'A UNIVERSITY
Biology Department
(Sana'a, Yemen)
Established in 1970, the University is home to the first Faculty of Science and Arts in Yemen (est. 1974). Approximately 100-120 students are accepted each year, 75% of which are female students. The undergraduate and newly founded Masters programs require all students to complete a graduation research project; however due to lack of state funding, students are forced to undertake very basic projects that do not require equipment or analytical software.
Ion channels in nervous, muscular and cardiac disorders
(Nice, France)
Led by Saïd Bendahhou, the group seeks to characterize naturally-occurring mutations in ion channels that lead to periodic paralysis, myotonia, paramyotonia congenita, and Andersens syndrome.

AL-AZHAR UNIVERSITY
(Cairo, Egypt)
Led by Saïd Bendahhou, the group seeks to characterize naturally-occurring mutations in ion channels that lead to periodic paralysis, myotonia, paramyotonia congenita, and namely Andersens syndrome.
Andersens Syndrome (AS) is a rare autosomal disorder, linked to the KCNJ2 gene that encodes for the strong inward rectifier K+ channel Kir2.1. Over 30 mutations have been identified on the KCNJ2 gene, which have been shown to lead to a loss of function of the channels activity. Our research looks at the molecular mechanism by which these channels become not functional and to look at how the these mutations affect normal cell function in skeletal muscle tissues.

(Yemen)
Established in 1971, Sana'a University is drivien by three guiding principles that is upheld in all of its faculties and departments: 1- Teaching 2- Research and 3- Social Services to its local communities.
The first faculty in Yemen was Faculty of Science and Art. The current Biology department consists of 3 divisions - Plant, Zoology and Microbiology - that are mainly committed to undergraduate studies. The majority of the students are mainly from Yemen and some other countries like Egypt and Iraq.
Approximately100-120 students are accepted each year, 75% of which are female students. Upon finishing their second year, the students are divided into the 3 divisions. Undergraduates must complete a 2 credit graduation research project. This is mainly composed of 1-2 simple experiments; however, due to the lack of facilities, students are grouped with 4-5 individuals to share the costs of reagents and experiment materials.
We also try to collaborate with other departments and faculties as well as hospitals, governmental institutions and sometimes private institutions for implementation of these experiments. These collaborations fill the financial gaps existing in most of our departments.
During the last 5 years we began accepting 5-7 master students from our best graduates. The Masters program requires the students to finish 8-10 course before starting their thesis research. Those students usually follow one path in their research topic from on of the 3 divisions. For example, in Microbiology, a student's masters research would involve the characterization of microorganisms (they differs only in the type of microorganism under investigation). In Zoology, they usually focus on anatomy and staining; whereas, in the Plant division, most of our projects are concerning in phenotypic flora and other plant natural population assessment and evaluation for either land restoration, conservation atc. On the other hand, the chemistry and physics departments are less interested in providing a Masters degree, because they require more materials and equipments.
Research topics are directed by the financial capacity and not by the necessity for either the students or development of research.
There are several companies in Yemen providing small amount of funding to some of the graduate students, but this is not available for all of us as funding is determined by the companies' strategies. Unfortunately, the Faculty of Science is the worst. As it is the oldest faculty located in the old campus of Sana'a University, the faculty has never been renewed or supported with new infrastructures. Moreover, it is far from new campus where the Agriculture and Medicine faculties are located, so sharing facilities is very difficult. Even when we talk about Molecular Genetics and modern Biotechnology, those well equipped faculties have nothing to do for us as this field of Science is almost new for Yemen.
That is why we are asking for your help.By helping us invest in our research and academic programs at the Faculty of Science, you can help us empower not just our students and the Yemeni scientific community, but that of our people and our greater community.
We thank you very much.
